The annual Scouting for Food (SFF) will be held on the first two weekends in November, the 1st and the 8th, 2014.
Bags for food donations will be distributed on Saturday November 1st, starting at 9:00am (meet at Cherrydale United Methodist Church [CUMC] parking lot). The neighborhoods for bag distribution are the same as last year - maps will be provided. Prior to distributing the bags (or at the time the bags are placed on doorknobs) flyers explaining the program are to be inserted in the bags. Parent drivers will shuttle a crew of scouts to our distribution area and follow them by car, as the boys place the bags on the residence's doorknobs.
On Thursday, November 6th, signs announcing the food pick-up on the 8th are to be placed in the neighborhoods. The troop has a number of signs similar to the election signs now along streets. This normally needs about 2 parents and 2 scouts.
On Saturday, November 8th at 9:00am, all scouts are to convene at the HB Woodlawn front driveway entrance to receive assignments for neighborhood food pick-up. After canvassing the assigned area scouts and parent drivers are to return to HB Woodlawn to sort the food items in like packing prior to transport to the central collection location. Scouts are also to reclaim the SFF signs in their collection areas for reuse.
NOTE: Start saving boxes - PLEASE BRING CARDBOARD BOXES on Nov 8th (approx 12" by 12") FOR THE SORTED FOOD ITEMS
Once food is collected and sorted in boxes, we will need drivers to transport the food to the drop off point, which will be at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 825 South Taylor St. in Arlington (same as last few years). The drop-off site will be open from 9AM-1PM on Nov 8th.
The directions from George Mason and Wilson Blvd are: turn south on George Mason Drive, stay on George Mason Drive across U.S. Route 50, go four blocks past Route 50, and turn right on South 4th St., then travel 1 block, and turn left on South Taylor St. The Church is 4 blocks down, on the left, at 825 South Taylor St. The second (further) entrance is the one we use for Scouting for Food, so you will circle around the back of the Church to approach the drop-off zone. The donations collected at this site will go to AFAC
It's mandatory that all scouts participate at least once in the worthy event. In previous years, our District collected more than 60,000 pounds of food
