Sinoquipe Summer Camp 2020 -- July 12-18

Troop 149 will be returning to Camp Sinoquipe this year. The dates are July 12–18 (a week later than normal due to where July 4 falls, and due to our Philmont crews being gone just before this).

Camp Sinoquipe is located about 115 miles from Washington DC and is northeast of Breezewood in Pennsylvania.

New Scouts should participate in the New Scout program, which emphasizes rank advancement for Scouts and Tenderfoot. Returning Scouts will participate in the merit badge program. If Sinoquipe continues their process from last year, merit badge signups will occur prior to camp. Once the merit badge schedule is ready, I will forward it to those attending summer camp and ask that they send me their selections.

The cost for each camper is $425 via check, or $438 via PayPal. Payment in full is due to the Troop by March 4th. See below for important payment notes.

A link to the signup form is below. You can also download the Sinoquipe Leader's Guide for 2020 at this link.

I will need the following three things from you to reserve a spot for your Scout or you...

1) payment in full by March 4th. Payments can be made through PayPal ($438 due to their 3% overhead) or by check made out to Troop 149 ($425). PLEASE NOTE that any payments made after March 4th MUST be made via PayPal: checks will NOT be accepted after March 4th.

2) an e-mail sent to rodman.sonja@gmail.com that provides the following information (this is in lieu of the "payment form" we have used in the past:
  1. Full Name of Scout attending
  2. Full Name of Parent(s)
  3. E-mail address for Scout (if available)
  4. E-mail address for Parent(s) to be used for all Sinoquipe related communications (Feel free to provide multiple addresses, especially if you want both parents in the loop!)
  5. Phone number for Scout (if available)
  6. Phone number for Parent
  7. Date on which payment was made through PayPal or check
3) a permission slip (also in the 'Key Links' on the right side of the Troop blog)

You may e-mail Items 2 and 3 to me, or drop them off (along with check payment) at 3801 24th St. N, Arlington, VA 22207.

Please also let Troop 149 know about your camp attendance using the link at the bottom of this page

Special note for adults: Right now the sign up is requesting only adults that can attend camp for the week or some number of days during the week.  Adult participation is crucial as we have a lot of scouts that attend summer camp so please consider attending. Additionally, we will need extra drivers to get us to and from camp.  There will be a separate call for drivers as we near our departure date. If you plan to stay for the week you will need to be a registered Scouter with the troop. Any adult staying less than 72 hours (i.e. half the week) does not have to register.

At a later date, I will also need to collect a BSA medical form for each Scout and adult that attends camp. You will need to have Parts A, B, and C completed.  I am providing this link now in case you have any doctor's appointments on the horizon, you can take these forms with you to get them completed.  You complete and sign Parts A and B.  A health care provider must complete and sign Part C.  This can be difficult to get completed at the last minute, so advance planning is highly recommended!

When you submit your medical forms you must include a copy of both sides of your health insurance card.

Blackburn Cabin Campout 2018 Signup

Troop 149 will have its Merit Badge and Advancement weekend on December 7-9. We will once again be staying at the Blackburn Trail Center cabin located on the Appalachian Trail just outside of Round Hill, VA.  Located on a 150 acre wooded tract, the commercial style kitchen provides two propane gas stoves, refrigerator and freezer, double sinks and two dishwashers. The kitchen is also well stocked with pots, pans and dishes, etc. It has electricity, hot and cold water, and wood burning stoves.

(Note that staying in the Trail Center does NOT count as "camping nights." If you need camping nights for advancement or merit badges, you will have to camp in a tent outside like us hard-core campers)

The weekend is designed to be a merit badge and advancement weekend that may include:
  • First Aid (Eagle required -- should have been earned at Sinoquipe but if you didn't get it, now you can)
  • Camping (Eagle required -- will not be extensive, just starting it or filling in partial requirements)
  • Moviemaking (limited to 7 Scouts, prioritized by rank, then order of signup)
  • Wilderness Survival (limited to 8 Scouts) -- Focus will be on first aid, fire building, shelters and signaling for help.  After sleeping in the cabin on Friday night, we will begin working on this MB after breakfast on Saturday and will sleep that night in shelters we construct during the day.
  • Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class requirements for those who are not yet First Class or higher
  • Helping with advancement for above (should be Star and Life scouts who don't need any of the above)
Cost is $35.35 / attendee for the cabin rental. Please pay for the cabin using the PayPal link below.

As always, pay your grubmaster $20 in cash on the Friday we depart. Adults pay their grubmaster $25 cash.

You must also have your signed permission slip (signed by you AND your parent) submitted before departure. Send to Cathy Gaudian (cmgaudian@gmail.com)

Also, you have to have turned in your signed Code of Conduct or you will not be allowed to go on the campout. Send signed Codes of Conduct, signed by parent and Scout, to janine.wilkin@gmail.com

Thanks and sign up today!

Family Life Merit Badge offering

Hello Troop 149 Scouts,

I'm Dr. Claire Kaufman (Joel's mom) and I will be offering the Family Life Merit Badge. The first meeting will be 6:30pm, either Monday Nov. 5 or 26, before the troop meeting.

The goal of this merit badge is to:
Understand your role in your family, how to strengthen your family, and how to effectively explain and discuss:
• How the actions of one family member can affect other members
• How to conduct a family meeting
• What makes an effective father and why.

The requirements involve having meetings with your family to discuss topics that can affect your family; planning and doing i) a project by yourself for your family and ii) a project with your family; and keeping track of your chores for 90 days. There will only be 3 group meetings, with the rest of the requirements done at home.

Because this is an Eagle Scout-required merit badge, priority will be given to more advanced scouts.  The group size will be capped at 12 scouts.

Email me (NOT to the troop email) to sign up no later than October 27 with your name and rank. Remember to include another adult on your email.  Scouts will be notified on Oct. 29 about whether or not they will be part of the group for this year. Never fear, this merit badge will be offered again next year and hopefully every year.

The requirements and workbook can be found at:
http://usscouts.org/mb/mb129.asp
(note this link contains the 2015 update to the merit badge)

Cooking Merit Badge Sign Up

Scouts in 8th grade and First class are invited to sign up for the Cooking Merit Badge.  This Eagle required badge is a fun but challenging badge.  There will be 2 group meetings as well as some work on your own and some work at various campouts and backpacking/hiking excursions.

Meetings will be held at Mrs. Mendelowitz' house (2307 N. Randolph Street)

The meeting dates are: Sunday, April 24 and Sunday, May 1.

The meetings will begin at 7:30PM and will conclude at 8:45PM.

Bring a notebook or paper to write on.  You may also bring a laptop or ipad for typing.

****If you only need to do the pre-requisites for Sinoquipe, plan on only attending the meeting on May 1.

The newest Cooking merit badge pamphlet is very difficult to find in stores so you may elect to print out the Cooking badge workbook instead.  The document is 34 pages long however, I printed it at home "back to back" so I only needed half as much paper.  The link for the document is below:

Note:  If you plan on signing up for this badge and you are also going on the Old Rag Hike on April 16....please see me at the beginning of the troop meeting on April 11.  This is a great opportunity to get one of your trail meals checked off!

Ask Mr. Hunt for a blue card at the troop meeting!

Family Life Merit Badge

Are you a Life Scout and want to get your Family Life merit badge? Ms. Atkins and Ms. McDonald will be starting a new class the week of March 14th. This merit badge requires, among other requirements, Scouts to prepare a list of at least five regular chores the scout does and for the scout to do these chores and keep track for 90 days. It also requires two projects, one with one’s family and one on the Scout’s own. This badge is an Eagle requirement and does take some time. Accordingly, please sign up right away; the class is limited to 8 Scouts. You must be over 13 and 8th grade (or older). Preference will be given to those Scouts that reached out to Ms. McDonald or Ms. Atkins prior to this notice and to those who are most senior (age/rank). When you register, please let us know what day of the week/night is the best night for you to meet.

Merit Badge Counselors Still Needed

Parents,

Working with Chain Bridge District, we have updated the Merit Badge Forms and
process. We would like to encourage you to become a Merit Badge Counselor –
it is great fun and a wonderful way to share your talents, interests and passions with
Scouts (and to get to know them better). Perhaps you want to do Whitewater merit
badge and do it in conjunction with the spring camp out, or perhaps  you  do
woodcarving or have a background in nuclear science or love to garden – there is
a badge for you!

Please see the attached information for the information you need to become a merit
badge counselor. Last year we lost a number of our very active merit badge counselors
(due to moves, graduation of their  sons, etc.), so please help us fill the void. Below
is a list of the Badges; we have at least one counselor for most of the Eagle (except
for Sustainability and First Aid), but please consider adding your name – we need the
flexibility, particularly on Eagle required badges. (see list below). For the other merit
badges, some of the counselors have boys that are older so don’t let that deter you.

Many thanks,
Laura

Merit Badge Counselor Information is Here

PS, if you are currently a merit badge counselor, could you please send me an email
confirming the badges and that you are willing to continue this year? Thanks.
