Camping Equipment Transport: We will also transport the camping gear to
the camp site, as this is a car camping trip. We will not be carrying camping gear on the bikes.

Rides: There will be 3 concurrent rides of different distances available. Scouts
may choose one of the three distances.
Parent Participation: Each ride requires a minimum of two adults that will stay
with their designated group. We can only offer these distances if we get enough adult support. Additionally, at least 2 adults are needed to manage the 2 drink stations and help transport those who cannot finish back to the base camp. Please indicate if you will be riding or prefer to assist with the drink stations.
Details:
The Troop 149 Bicycling Campout will be held on May 15 - 17. We will camp at
the Fort Frederick State Park near Williamsport, MD.
The trip will essentially be a normal Friday - Sunday camp out with Saturday's
main activity being bike rides of various lengths. We will be camping at Maryland's Fort Frederick State Park West of Williamsport MD and on the Potomac River.
Anticipated ride lengths: 12 miles, and 25 miles depending upon the number
of adult volunteers. The older scouts will have the option of a 50 mile ride. Those interested in riding the 50 mile ride will need trip leader permission.
All of the rides are on a flat paved Western Maryland Rail Trail (former railroad
Right-of-Way) which means it is flat with no car traffic. The trail is paved, however the 50 mile ride will include about 6 miles on the hard pack C&O Towpath. BSA rules require the use of a bicycle helmet.
In addition to access to the Western Maryland Rail Trail and the C&O Tow
Path, the park has many other amenities. There is a historic structure in the park, which could be used to satisfy a requirement for the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge. There is also an optional stop at Pizza Hut for lunch! Shuttle drivers will be needed for any in the 12 mile group that wants to have lunch at Pizza Hut. |
