Northern Tier 2021 -- let us know if you're interested

Scouts and adults: The lottery for crews interested in going to Northern Tier in summer 2021 will open in a couple of weeks. We want to gauge interest for Scouts who would like to attend.

Northern Tier is one of the four high-adventure bases that the BSA operates. You will spend a week canoeing in the Boundary Waters that connect Canada and Minnesota. This is an incredible experience. One adult who went to Northern Tier in 2018 said it was one of the best trips of his life. Depending on which base you depart from, you may not see anyone else but your crewmates for the week you are on the water.

Here are the three bases and some pros/cons to each (note that the adults leading the trip will ultimately choose which base to attend).

  • Ely, Minnesota—Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base. Pros: it's America, no passports needed. Cons: crew size is limited to 8.
  • Atikokan, Ontario—Donald Rogert Canoe Base. Pros: crew size can be 11, much less crowded than the US side of the Boundary Waters. Cons: passport required, more expensive.
  • Bissett, Manitoba—Northern Expeditions Canoe Base. Pros: crew size of 11, even less crowded than Atikokan. Cons: requires access by float plane (so more expensive), "most extreme high adventure in Scouting," "most appropriate for older crews with previous High Adventure experience," only aluminum canoes (heavy).
This page has info on the 2021 lottery, which opens January 7 and ends January 13. It includes prices for the high-adventure base; prices do not include plane fare and ground transportation. Deposits will be due by mid-February 2020.

As always, high adventure camps require that you be 14 years old at the time you arrive, or 13 and having finished 8th grade. Troop 149 requires that you achieve First Class rank prior to departing.
