(Note: this is a change from the MLK weekend campout
posted on our original troop calendar)
Here's a quick summary of what we typically do at one of
our most popular “campouts” of the year.
There are two houses, across the street from one
another, in an oceanfront community in Rehoboth, DE.
Friday, we have two departure options – either leaving
at 3:00 (meet at 2:30) or leaving at 5:00 pm (meet at 4:30). We
encourage everyone possible to choose the 3:00 option to avoid traffic, but
if you can’t leave at that time choose the later option. Those leaving at 3
will eat at a McDonalds/Wendys/etc. in Rehoboth (bring $), while those leaving at
5 pm should take a brown bag dinner (it is a long drive).
We strongly encourage you to sign up as soon as
possible, as those who sign up first will get their departure preference (if
there aren’t enough drivers at one time, some scouts may be moved to the other
departure time).
Saturday, we get up, have breakfast (cooked for you by
the adults) and head to the beach in Ocean City, MD; a 20-minute drive away. Then
we "hike" the entire stretch of the boardwalk, which is about 2
miles. At the end of the hike we are
surrounded by arcades and beach food establishments. Lunch will be purchased
there, or at a nearby fast food location. Scouts should bring along $ for lunch
and for the arcades. It's up to the
parents how much the scouts spend at the arcades.
Other money matters:
The scouts will need to bring $25 for house meals (breakfast and
Saturday dinner) and cleaning fee; adults should bring $30. There is a chance this amount may vary by a
few dollars (we’ll try to let you know before departure date). There will be only one adult grubmaster,
Chris, and this money should make it to him on Friday. The additional $10/scout
(above and beyond the $15 that we usually ask for) should cover the cost of the
seafood feast we all eat together on Saturday night as well as a mandatory
cleaning fee for one of the houses.
Back to the schedule:
After the arcades and we're all broke and have exchanged our winning
coupons for plastic swords, candy or ???, then we head out for a visit to
Assateague State Park on the ocean, south of Ocean City or go on some other
adventure. Exhaustion is setting in by
this time so we then buy the makings for the joint dinner, including the
seafood. Hopefully, they'll have live
crabs or, if not, perhaps we'll have lobsters.
It's a tough life. For those not seafood-oriented, there will be a pasta
option (please indicate your preference when you sign up so we can get the
proper quantities of each).
Sunday, we get up, clean the houses and head home after
a quick cold breakfast. We'll have the
scouts call their parents to arrange a timely pick up. We're usually home by 1 pm or so.
Other tidbits of Interest:
1. Bring a pad
and sleeping bag. We sleep ON the beds
(over the sheets), if you are lucky enough to get a bed. Everyone else is on
the floor.
2. No mess kits
needed: everything to eat with and eat on is provided.
3. This is the
only trip where electronics are allowed. Don't expect fancy TVs to hook your
console up to. Talk to someone who's been there for specifics. Bring your own
monitor if you know the car you’re traveling in has room for it!
SIGN-UP IS CLOSED!!
