Northern Tier 2018 – Sign Up And Deposit Required No Later Than Monday, February 20!

Troop 149’s high adventure trip for summer 2018 is canoeing at BSA’s Northern Tier Bissett, Manitoba High Adventure base from July 27-August 5, 2018.

Our canoeing trek is a seven-night long adventure in the boundary waters region between the United States and Canada.  For 2018, we will be canoeing in Canada’s Atikaki Provincial Park, one of the region’s most remote locations, which requires the crews to use float planes for drop off and pick up in the wilderness. The BSA guide describes this area as “the most remote High Adventure opportunity in the Boy Scouts of America,” and states that it is remarkable for, among other things, excellent fishing.

In short, this is a true wilderness adventure, and is particularly suited to scouts who have had prior high adventure experience.

Northern Tier is also one of BSA’s four high adventure bases, and counts towards both the BSA Triple Crown and BSA Grand Slam High Adventure awards.

Requirements for Scouts to attend the trip:

1.     14 years old or 13 years old and completed the 8th grade by the day of departure
2.     Achieved First Class rank by the day of departure
3.     Be at least 100 lbs. and no more than 295 lbs.
4.     Passed the BSA Swim Test
5.     Be physically fit, prepared to portage heavy packs and canoes
6.     Have a current U.S. passport

Additional requirements for adults:

1.     Wilderness First Aid certified
2.     Youth Protection Training certified
3.     CPR and First Aid Certified
4.     Weather Hazards trained
5.     Safe Swim Defense Trained
6.     Safety Afloat Trained

We were able to obtain a reservation for only two crews, so space is limited, and I urge all who are interested to sign up immediately as space will go quickly. Priority goes to Scouts who have not previously attended Northern Tier, and after that, we will use age and rank to sort out available space if necessary.

For adults, priority on the trip goes to Troop Leaders, keeping in mind the goal of maximizing the number of Scouts who can attend. Interested adults are encouraged to sign up but we may not be able to accommodate all who are interested. Two or three adults per crew is normal, though more can attend if space is available.

Please sign up using the link below. After signing up you need to deliver to Mr. Lowry a deposit check for $100 made out to Boy Scout Troop 149. Bring your deposit check to the troop meeting on February 13 or February 20. Please note that this deposit is non-refundable.
