Hello, my name is Kelso W and I am a Life Scout of Troop 149. I started with the troop in 1st grade as a Cub Scout and I am excited to have reached the point to work on my Eagle Project.
I will be leading the building and installation of different types of animal houses for three different local parks. These parks include: Gulf Branch, Long Branch and Bluemont Park. The three different animal boxes that will be built are Screech Owl boxes, Flying Squirrel boxes (nesting and roosting boxes), and native Mason bees boxes. There will be 4 box types and 3 boxes of each will be built in each park for a total of 12.
The first phase of the project will be building the boxes on May 19th. The second phase of the project will take place on June 3rd where we will be installing the boxes at the parks. I realize some of you will be on the rafting trip earlier and hope that I can get enough volunteers to help out on Sunday.
This is a great opportunity to give back to our local park system and help enhance wildlife habitat while working on your woodworking skills and getting service hours for your advancement. Lunch and snacks will be provided at each session.
On May 19th, we will be building the boxes. There are several time slot options to sign up for. In addition to Scouts, I need adults at each session to help out with this project to operate some of the power tools like circular saws. This day is most appropriate for older Scouts, rising 7th grade+.
10-11:30: Screech Owl boxes will be built
11:30-12:00: Break for lunch.
12-1:30:Flying Squirrel nesting boxes will be built
2:00-3:30: Bee boxes will be built.
3:30-5:00: Flying squirrel roosting boxes will be built.
On June 3rd, there are 3 time slots for installation of the boxes. Because this work involves some heights on ladders, I will need support at each session from adults as well as Scouts. Transportation will be provided between parks for Scouts that sign up for more than one session.
Long Branch Park: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (Includes Lunch)
Bluemont Park: 12:30 PM -- 2:00 PM
Gulf Branch Park: 2:30 PM -- 4:00 PM
We will build rain or shine. Installation will be rescheduled if there is inclement weather.
